Before and After 2020

'Before and After 2020' is a zine that works as an exhibition on paper, wishing to challenge the conventional exhibition module.

Stepping into a new decade of the 2020’s, the world is coming to an unprecedented and critical moment in history. The voices of young artists / creative practitioners would become a valuable representation of mapping a future global scene. This is a project that attempts to review the past (before 2020) and portrays the future way of living (after 2020) by a group of emerging art practitioners (including filmmaker, animator, photographer, graphic designer, painter, illustrator, performance artist and installation artists) who are from different originalities(Zurich, Bangkok, Seoul, Paris, London, Iceland, Hong Kong, Beijing, Macau and Guangzhou), wishing to bring the time before 2020 and after 2020 into the present, through zine-making.

Under the ongoing situation of global crisis, we experiment with this tangible but reproducible and transformable way of exhibiting visual artwork. We are art practitioners from around the world, this project would set Hong Kong as a base that maps emerging visual artists across the globe to have a cultural exchange for their unique point of view on the unprecedented global challenges. This project looks into the research topic of Topophilia and casts light on the neglected and forgotten parts of the city. Topophilia, terms from Greek topos "place" and -philia, "love of”, is a “strong sense of place, which often becomes mixed with the sense of cultural identity among certain people and a love of certain aspects of such a place.” People from different originalities all form their own paths of connectivities to places that they inhabit, and even to the particular site that they pass through occasionally. 'Before and After 2020' wishes to express the artists’ interpretation on the atmosphere, geography, the sense of permanence or change of these particular places in form of exhibition on paper/zine.

It could be a reflection on contemporary political and social shifts conveyed by the artists’ emotional, aesthetic and sentimental responses to the personal stories about the city; the unexpected encounters that catch one’s attention; or the events that took place in the particular places of the city. Our goal is to explore the new possibilities of visual art in this chaotic situation. At the same time, we also hope that through this collaboration, we can bring up new perspectives and inspirations about the contemporary world situation.
